Train your body to thrive under stress

What if I told you that you could literally train your body to THRIVE under stress?

When we’re stressed, most of us try to:

●     Think (or overthink) our way through it

●     Numb it with distractions

●     Or let it take over our large chunks of our day

Workouts can help manage stress

But, if there’s one thing you can do to get through stressful times quicker and with more resilience, it’s moving your body on a regular basis.

Exercise actually trains your body to deal with stressors by triggering your fight-or-flight responses that you would have to use. In other words, exercise is a way for your body to “practice” the stress by handling the workload, so it knows what to do when real stress strikes!

Pretty cool, right?

Bonus: exercise endorphins can give your mood a boost, too. So even just going for a walk or fitting in a really quick workout can help tame other negatives that come with stress.

This is so important when it comes to building healthier habits in general. Cortisol (the stress hormone) can make it so much harder to manage so many things, from appetite control, to sleep quality, to energy levels... and when those defenses are down, it's harder to choose in favor of the better-for-you options.

A regular workout routine is the standard to shoot for, but if you want some simpler ways to “move” through stress, here are a few activities you might want to consider:

●     Take breaks throughout the day with 15- to 30-second stretches anytime you start to feel overwhelmed (or even just after a busy spell)

●     Do some light yoga before bed to blow off steam and prep your body for sleep

●     Take a short walk during your breaks to clear your head, increase circulation, and stretch your legs

The bottom line is that stress management is a key part of your goals, and will help you gain control over your wellness ... if that means simply making healthier choices, or more complicated goals all the way up to rebuilding the body you want.
