Holidays: strike a balance that's right for you

Writer's picture: Dawn HollisterDawn Hollister

Real talk: saying “no” to family or friends around the holidays can be pretty tough.

●     Saying “no thanks” to food you don't want at parties

●     Skipping late cocktails to stay fresh for the next day

●     Or passing on plans to prioritize sleep

It’s not always easy to protect time, energy, and routines.

For years, I thought it was difficult to say no to holiday food made by the host. I’d end up eating food that didn't agree with me, and more than usual...which left me feeling tired and frustrated. I had to decide it just wasn’t worth it!

If you can relate… you’re not alone.

You can balance splurges with non-negotiables

Having said that, enjoying the season doesn’t mean you have to give up on healthy habits and all of your goals. Going into the holidays with a clear idea of your “non-negotiables” (and where you can be flexible) can help you strike a balance that's right for you.

Maybe eating a gluten-free diet is non-negotiable because it makes you feel sick.

But maybe you can allow yourself a few gluten-free treats instead.

Maybe getting to sleep by a certain time is a non-negotiable.

But maybe you can pick a weekend for holiday parties and staying out later.

If you’re struggling to communicate boundaries about non-negotiables to others, here are a phrases you can try:

●     “I’d love to, but I have a few things I need to do. Let’s catch up soon!”

●     “That looks delicious, but X doesn’t agree with my stomach.”

●     “I’m going to head out a bit early tonight so I can get an early start tomorrow.”

●     “I’d love to, but I’m going to take some time to recharge. Let’s plan something next week!”

●     “That looks amazing, but I’m going to pass for now.”

Make it ok to potentially disappoint someone else when you say “no,” because it honors what you need. That is just as important as any holiday plans.

The holidays are about joy and connection, but that should also include the joy and connection with yourself, too.

P.S. So many women struggle to prioritize their health when life gets busy. No one is perfect!
