Enter: The 2 Day Rule

Writer's picture: Dawn HollisterDawn Hollister

You know those stretches of time when life seems to be throwing one obstacle after another, right in the middle of your path?

Work stresses, a kid coming down sick, or just being so exhausted that you feel like you literally don't have the bandwidth for ONE MORE THING.

That's when it can feel the easiest to let healthy habits slide. Before you know it, a few days missed turn into weeks (or even months) of ignored habits that would actually help you feel better if you just had the determination to do them.

Never miss a third day in a row!

But there's hope!

Enter: The 2-Day Rule.

The rule is super easy: Never miss more than two days in a row. Ever. No matter what.

It doesn’t mean you can’t take a break or skip a workout. It’s about building in flexibility without losing consistency.

If you need a rest day, great. If you miss two days, okay. But when you're on the verge of missing a third day?

DRAW THE LINE. You get back to it, somehow, do something...even if it’s a smaller than normal effort.

Why It Works:

  1. It maintains momentum. It’s never about perfection; it’s always about not letting the gap between actions get too wide.

  2. It reduces pressure, Knowing you have a 2 day cushion to take action makes all of your goals feel within reach and eliminates any stress of "starting over,"

  3. It builds trust with yourself. Following this rule helps you prove to yourself that you can stay committed, even when things get tough...and that you're worth it!

Here’s how to use it:

●     If you have a goal of working out regularly, and you miss two days, make sure you get some form of exercise on that third day. It can be just a 10-minute walk or stretch session, but it should be something.

●     If you’re trying to establish a meal prep habit, and you miss a couple days, dedicate yourself and the time to prep one meal on the third day to get back on track.

●     An example from my own life: I use the 2-Day Rule for my meditation practice. If I miss two days, I make sure to do even just a 5-minute session on the 3rd day, even if I’m really busy.

Here's my favorite part: It’s forgiving and flexible and doesn't feel so "all or nothing," but it keeps you from drifting too far away from any of your goals.

So, the next time life gets busy (because it will!), remember: don’t miss 3 days in a row. It seems so simplistic, but it can make a huge difference in building habits that will finally stick.
