I hope you're enjoying the last few moments of the holiday season!
I spent New Year's Eve as I often do...watching movies and NYE festivities on TV, including of course ... THE ball drop! I used to be "out" and will likely consider doing that again someday, but I've definitely enjoyed being at home in pajamas for the past several years.
In fact, when my daughters have also been with us (most of those years), we also play at least one heated game of Scrabble.... and maybe a couple other board games. We've had some great memories from that more-competitive-than- you'd-think tradition. 🤣
Now, if you're like most people… You're probably thinking about your goals for the new year.
But before you jump into setting New Year's resolutions… let's take a beat.
How did your resolutions go last year? Or the year before that? How about before that?
As many of us have likely noticed, setting a big goal just because it's January 1st and we feel like we should isn't nearly enough to make it stick.
Not because resolutions are “bad” — but if you want to actually reach a goal, it helps to make "resolutions" more meaningful and specific, incremental, and less tied to a date on the calendar.
So BEFORE you assign yourself a big list of goals…reflect on these 3 questions:
What HABITS would make the biggest impact on my daily life now? Sometimes I think we overestimate how much effort is needed to reach our goals. Think about which habits will give you the biggest return in the short run first.
What's held me back in the past from taking action? This isn’t to beat yourself up. It’s to get ahead of challenges before they become a problem. If there’s something that keeps getting in your way, NOW is the best time to acknowledge it and plan for it.
How does this goal align with my core values? When your goals reflect what's truly important to you, you're MUCH more likely to stick with them. For example, if family is a core value, frame your health goals around being there for the people you care about. In my Goal Getters groups, we refer to this as "finding your why."
If you can answer these questions, you’ll end up with goals you’re actually excited about. You can still call them resolutions if you like. :)
And that doesn't apply to just right now… in a month, two months, or even six months from now… long after almost everyone else has given up...you'll still be making progress.
So, take some time to reflect on these.
If you can, write down your answers, and refine your goals (resolutions) from there. And here's to making 2025 your best year yet!
